Behind The Story:
Nestled among the redwoods of Sebastopol, Tree House
Edge was designed as a restorative retreat for our client
and her family, trading the pace of San Francisco for
nature, her beloved garden, and room to breathe.
Intentionality shaped every decision. Her Jamaican
heritage, love of the natural world, and deeply personal
art collection, including work by Gordon Parks, are
woven throughout the home alongside natural materials
and collected pieces chosen for their meaning.
The result is a home that feels peaceful, grounded, and
unmistakably hers, reflecting a deliberate choice to live
surrounded by beauty, meaning, and a little more
peace.
Gathering Around Nature
We let the redwoods do what they do best: steal the show.
The living and dining spaces were composed around the
views, with low silhouettes, warm woods, tactile materials,
and an earthy palette that pulls the landscape inward rather
than fighting for attention. Here, gathering happens with
nature as part of the room, not simply something seen
through the windows.

A Study in Contrast
The house moves between two worlds:
expansive views into the garden and darker,
more intimate moments within. We leaned into
that tension, using glass, warm wood, and deep
architectural finishes to choreograph the
transition between them. Even the passageways
become experiences, framing glimpses of what
came before and what waits around the corner.

Beauty in the Practical
We treated storage as part of the architecture,
wrapping the home's private spaces in custom
walnut millwork that brings rhythm, warmth, and
a sense of permanence. Even the most practical
parts of the home were given the same attention
as everything else, because function doesn't have
to disappear to be beautiful.
The Garden, Framed
Throughout the home, we treated views of the
garden almost as living works of art. In the
primary bath, ribbed limestone wraps the shower
walls and ceiling, creating an architectural frame
around the moon garden beyond the glass.
It is a gesture repeated elsewhere, including the
game room daybed, where architecture
deliberately crops the landscape into a
composition. The garden changes with the light,
weather, and seasons, so the picture is never
quite the same twice.

SLEEPING IN THE TREES
In the home's private spaces, we kept the palette quiet
enough for the landscape to become the drama. Beds, baths,
and windows were composed around the redwoods, creating
moments where waking up, bathing, or simply looking
outside feels almost like being suspended among the trees.
THE POOL HOUSE
Our client calls it her jewel box in nature, and we
designed it to hold an almost impossible number
of lives within one small footprint. Office, bar,
fireside lounge, guest retreat, and pool house all
coexist here, with a custom Murphy desk that
disappears when the workday ends and a full
pocket door that opens the room completely to the
landscape. Saturated color and rich materials give
this little building an identity all its own.
SMALL SPACE, MANY LIVES
Every inch had to earn its place. The sleeping loft
tucks above the main living space, while custom
built-ins and concealed functions allow the room
to shift easily from workday to weekend, private
retreat to a place for friends. What could have felt
like a series of compromises instead became part
of the fun: a tiny world where everything has more
than one purpose
